What Is Flirting A Psychological Explanation

Flirting is a social behavior related to romantic interest and attraction. Flirting behaviors can be verbal or non-verbal. While some flirting styles are culturally specific, others are universal. Psychologists who study flirting from the evolutionary perspective view flirting as an innate process that developed as a result of natural selection. These psychologists consider flirting to be the human equivalent of the courtship rituals practiced by non-human animals. Did You Know? Psychologists have found that one of the most common flirting behaviors is the eyebrow flash: raised eyebrows held for a fraction of a second. An eyebrow flash is a social signal used to indicate recognition and a desire to initiate social contact. Eyebrow flashes are common in flirting interactions, but they are also used in platonic contexts. Universal Flirting Behaviors In a 1971 study, Irenà ¤us Eibl-Eibesfeldt observed flirting behaviors among Balinese, Papuan, French, and Wakiu individuals. He found that certain behaviors occurred were common to all four groups: the eyebrow flash (a social signal that involves raising ones eyebrows for a fraction of a second), smiling, nodding, and moving closer to the other person. A 2018 meta-analysis of previous behavior and attraction studies reached similar results, concluding that the behaviors most significantly related to attraction are smiling, laughing, mimicry, eye contact, and increasing physical proximity. These behaviors are not limited to romantic attraction; these behaviors occurred when study participants felt positively about another person, whether in a romantic or platonic context. However, the researchers point out that these behaviors are important for building trust and strengthening a relationship, which might explain why we tend to show these behaviors when we’re attracted to someone. Styles of Flirting Some nonverbal flirting behaviors are universal, but not everyone flirts in exactly the same way. In a 2010 study, Jeffrey Hall and his colleagues asked over 5,000 people to rate how accurately different behaviors described their own flirting style. They concluded that flirting styles can be grouped into five different categories: Traditional. The traditional style refers to flirting that follows traditional gender roles. People who employ this flirting style would tend to expect men to approach women, rather than vice versa.Physical. People with a physical flirting style report are likely to openly express their romantic interest in another person. This flirting style is also related to extroversion. People who report using the physical flirting style also tend to rate themselves as more social and outgoing.Sincere. People who use a sincere flirting style are interested in forming an emotional connection. They engage in friendly behavior and show a genuine interest in getting to know the other person.Playful. People who use a playful flirting style see flirting as fun. They often engage in flirting behaviors for enjoyment, rather than to form a relationship. In Halls study, playful was the only flirting style for which men rated themselves more highly than women.Polite. People who use the polite flirting styl e engage in flirting behaviors that carefully follow social norms. They are particularly cautious and seek to avoid any behavior that might be deemed inappropriate. In real life scenarios, multiple flirting styles can be used at once, and an individual may use different flirting styles in different situations. However, this inventory of flirting styles clearly demonstrates that flirting behaviors vary across individuals. These findings suggest that, while flirting is universal, exactly how we flirt depends on our individual preferences and social context. Sources Hall, Jeffrey A., Steve Carter, Michael J. Should Minimum Wage Be Raised - 1337 Words

U.S. Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has said, â€Å"It is a national disgrace that millions of full-time workers are living in poverty and millions more are forced to work two or three jobs just to pay their bills† (Wolf 1). Sanders has said this frequently and is referring to the drastic amount of Americans who are currently struggling, despite already having a job. The issue of whether or not to raise the minimum wage in America has been a widely discussed topic for years. Minimum wage refers to the smallest amount of money a worker can legally be paid in the U.S. It was first signed into law in 1938 by President Franklin Roosevelt in order to keep workers out of poverty and as it stands, the current federal minimum wage in†¦show more content†¦This quote suggests that an important factor of a booming economy is the worker. A simple fact is that the more the worker makes, the more goes into the economy. Moreover, in President Obama’s State o f the Union address back in 2013, he notes that raising the minimum wage means that â€Å"for businesses across the country, it would mean customers with more money in their pockets† (Luhby 1). This proposes that an increase in the minimum wage helps businesses as well as the worker. As of right now, American people whose sole income is through a minimum wage salary can barely afford to pay for basic needs such as groceries and rent. With not a dollar to spare, every single penny of their already small paycheck goes towards these basic necessities. With an increase in their salary, the more Americans making minimum wage can spend on things outside of their basic necessities, which would in turn help out businesses in America and contribute the economy of the country as a whole. A second reason why the minimum wage needs to be increased is that it would help working-class families. When people in America think of the average minimum wage worker, they think of a teenager. Contr ary to this widely held belief, this is not the case of modern day America. According to an infographic released by the Economic Policy Institute, a nonprofit that researches economic

Seven Wonders Free Essays

About a hundred years after the Statue of Zeus came the Temple of Artemis. It was built in the ancient city of Ephesus, or modern day Turkey. The architect Theodorus probably built the incredible temple, and he most likely did so to honor the Greek Goddess of the Moon, Artemis. We will write a custom essay sample on Seven Wonders or any similar topic only for you Order Now Tragically, a man named Herostratus set the Temple of Artemis on fire along with a group of Goths in an attempt to have his name go down in history. He managed to do so and city officials tried to enforce a new law stating that if any one citizen of Ephesus mentioned his name, they would receive the death penalty; the attempt failed. All of religion at this point declined because Artemis did not protect her temple. The structure as well as the story is terrific. Measuring about three hundred feet by one hundred fifty feet, and the one hundred twenty seven columns each having a heighth of about sixty feet, one can easily see how the Temple of Artemis’ means of construction are a complete mistery. Theodorus built the columns so that they had proportions to the human body. Aside from that, it was completed around 440 B. C. and took approximately one hundred twenty years to build. Such strenuous man labor classify this temple as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Contemporary to the Temple of Artemis was the Mausoleum, which was located in Halicarnassus, or present day Turkey. It all began when Mausolus took over with Artemisia. In 353 B. C. , Mausolus died, leaving his wife Artemisia, who was also his sister, incredibly depressed. In honor of Mausolus, she decided to build him the â€Å"most splendid tomb in the known world. † The Mausoleum surprisingly managed to remain intact after over sixteen centuries. It went through many hardships and risky situations, one being the reign of Alexander the Great, and yet somehow never fell apart. It did, however, eventually collapse when a severe sequence of earthquakes passed in the fifteenth century. Unlike the other â€Å"Wonders of the World,† this building did not rely on size, but rather on beauty to catch the eyes of modern people. That is to say, the Mausoleum was so beautiful and unique that it became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. How to cite Seven Wonders, Papers
